With increased traffic at higher speed, and with heavier axle loads, the inspection of railroads is as important to conduct as it has ever been. As well as the focus of the inspection is a fairly well-defined piece of steel, the variables that need to be considered in all aspects of the operation is an importand task. The paper described some developments of Sperry Rail Service to address these requirements. In 1959, a first all-ultrasonic car developed specifically to meet the needs of New York. The fleet has since grown to its current size of more than 40 test cars. This comprises railbound induction / ultrasonic cars and road / rail or hi-rail ultrasonic cars. |
