Abstract : The problems which remained to be resolved in the hot testing of continuously cast products at the start of the project were the identification of surface defects, subsurface defects and interior defects and the determination of the strand shell thickness and liquid crater depth. The purpose of the project was to develop, build and test an electromagnetic ultrasonic testing system (EMUS-PSY) for use in the steel production process. An operative prototype test system for the detection of edge cracks on slabs with a maximum surface temperature of 600 C was built and tested under field conditions. Flaw detection was achieved by means of electromagnetically generated surface waves (Rayleigh waves). The viability of this process could be validated by means of field tests in the scarfing shop.
