Examination of austenitic steel welded joints using the ultrasonic technique is still difficult, due to problems caused by high
attenuation and dissipation of ultrasonic waves, as well as variations of wave propagation speed and direction. Those effects
influence proper interpretation of the flaw detector screen record.
This paper discusses effectiveness of ultrasonic testing of austenitic steel IH 1 8N9T, of thickness in the range 10 - 24 mrn,
using longitudinal and transverse
waves.
