Abstract
Over the past 40 years, Non-destructive Testing has been predominant in the maintenance policy of the Royal Air Forces' aircraft. This paper aims to provide an insight into the development of the Royal Air Forces Non-Destructive Testing policy and Squadron organisation over those 40 years. It describes some of the more significant arisings that have occurred and how the in-house training of our technicians has been developed to ensure that quality and reliability are maintained. The paper will also look at how new technologies are appraised for introduction into service, thereby maintaining a best practice philosophy for NDT inspections. Finally the paper will discuss some of the Squadrons current NDT challenges: the introduction of new materials; the adoption of NDT as a search tool for large area mapping; and, the early detection of corrosion and multi-site damage in our ageing aircraft fleets.
