Measurements have been carried out at the Budapest(l) research reactor for the purpose to control the condition of helicopter rotor blades after normal and extreme loads and environmental effects. Between the tests cyclic thermal-shocks (-30°C to +70°C) have been applied to the specimens.
High resolution neutron radiographic pictures were taken on the anomaly of the distribution of resin materials at the core-honeycomb-hull interfaces or failure of the "adhesive filling", the possible bondline flaws were inspected, etc.
Parallel to the neutron radiographic visualization some tests were taken for the control of dynamic behaviour of structure with vibration diagnostic methods. These measurements were focused on the changes of structural damping.
As a result of the work it is suggested that the combined application of the neutron radiography and the vibration diagnostics might be a very useful method for the condition monitoring of rotor blades and other similar structures.
