Abstract

The first requirements concerning the qualification and certification of NDT personnel have appeared at the beginning of the seventies. It was in the sphere of nuclear power stations in application of the ASME code. These qualification and certification have been at this time under the responsability of the employer and have been carried out in accordance with the specification ASN TCla.

In the second half of seventies, many European NDT Societies have decided to take under their responsability this item by creating their certifying body which take into account the American specification. The result was a third party certification.

In order to achieve the European single market it was decided to prepare an European standard on this object which will harmonize the different schemes of certification. The EN 473 was ratified in 1993 and is now applied by the European countries.

The present situation is presented, i.e. the present certifying bodies and their history, the number of delivered certification, the number of NDT certified personnel, the reference of this certification in the European regulation, are described.
