In 1997, accreditation was transferred to the British Institute of Non-destructive Testing, which became the certification body operating the PCN Scheme for certification of personnel and quality management systems.
Considerable experience has been acquired in operating certification systems to these standards and, in all cases, a searching assessment of technical competence and quality management has preceded the award of accreditation.
This paper summarises the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the standards involved, including both initial issue and draft revisions, and of the accreditation process, and discusses the author's view of the scope and content of the ideal standards and accreditation system for assessment and certification of competence of NDT personnel.
