Radiographic wallthickness-measurements of insulated piping in the chemical and petrochemicalindustry are typically carried out by exposing film-cassettes with Ir 192 radiation.The radiographicimage of the tube is then evaluated off-line after the film is developed. A new mobile planararray-sensor is capable of generating radiographic on-line images even when common Ir 192sources are used. These images are shown on a computer screen on-line and can be evaluatedon-site during the examination.

Active area of the detector is 200 mm x 200 mm with a resolution of 400 µm per pixel. The detectoroffers a linear gray-scale resolution of 16 bit which allows a wide range of materials and dimensionsto be examined.

First results obtained with a prototype-system will be presented.

This new development is also of great interest in first-aid-medical and veterinary-medicalapplications.
