The Importance of Reliable NDE Measurements in Plant Management Systems.

During many years, advances have been made in the optimisation of production means, such as pressure vessels and lines. Especially during recent years, organizational systems such as ISO 9000 certification have been introduced, often in combination with data management systems. Although these systems have brought major improvements in the accessibility of data and the management processes of capital plant, these systems can only be as good as the data which they are fed with. Optimisation of maintenance by example, using Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) or optimization of inspection by the use of Risk Based Inspection strategies NIMBI) is in principle based upon aiming most energy at those parts of plant where inspection is necessary based upon high risk and consequence of failure, rather than at those areas where risk and consequences are low. The assumption however is, that the inspection will reveal all defects causing the failures, and with adequate accuracy and reproducibility. This paper describes a number of methods that can be used in those circumstances.
