VINTEST measures the magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) of the plate with the identification number. The values of these features for a given type of vehicles are determined by the processing technology. Manipulating the figures of the vehicle identification number results in changes in the values of the MBN. These changes can be detected by comparing the figures to one another or to the master curve. VINTEST software contains the master curves for the different types of vehicles which are based on measurements performed on a great number of vehicles of the same type.
The instrument can detect changes even when the figures are not manipulated but a part or parts of the plate are replaced. in this case the instrument can detect the site of replacement.
VINTEST software includes the catalogue of vehicle identification numbers for types produced in Europe since 1980 and for most types produced since 1980 which are sold in Europe.
When performing the examination the first step is to record the identification number and other data (type of car body, type of engine). The software compares the other data to the identification number and shows any possible contradiction. Then the figures of the identification number are examined. After the examination the computer presents the results in a diagram.Comparison to the master curve reduces the subjective factors a minimum. When computer aided, the measurement can be performed by one person only and it takes about 5 minutes.
Development are testing of the methode and equipment have been carried out with expert help from police offices of ORFK (Hungarian Police Headquarters).
