Use of the terms
"Non destructive testing" is the most common and widely known term. Oddly the term "testing" is only used in PT standard. In other standards "examination" or sometimes "inspection" are used. All terms are correctly used but they vary considerably from one standard to another. The person performing testing is referred to as "personnel" or "operator". The most obvious terms "tester", "examiner" or "inspector" are not used. The object of the testing is referred to as "object" or "part" and in MT "component".
Results of the testing are "indications" which are caused by "imperfections" or "defects". Neither "discontinuity" nor "flaw" appear in any of these standards. "Indications" are "evaluated" and compared to "reporting" and "acceptance levels". Indication has the form and length of the imperfection in VT, PT and MT. In RT indication is a projected image showing the length and width of the imperfection. In UT indication is an echo on the screen and thus the length of an indication is totally irrational.
Results
In order to avoid confusion the use of the terms in standards should be agreed on. Only one of the terms shall be used. "Testing" is the best one because the term is the same as in "Non Destructive Testing". Obviously a person is then called "tester" and the object "object". InVT, PT MT and RT acceptance levels shall be given in the sizes of "indication", in UT echo and length of a "defect", not an "indication". "Imperfection" and "defect" are close toeach other. Either one, but only of them may be chosen.
