Abstract
The whole area of NDT of welded structures is currently undergoing a period of rapid change brought about a combination of technological and economic factors world wide. The rapid advances in computer technology have made the incorporation of computer power into test systems. The application of computers to NDT, and particularly ultrasonic testing and radiography are now legion(1). One of the main problem concerning ultrasonic testing is the defect typology classification. In the manual ultrasonic testing, the characterization is due to the operator who might introduce some subjective elements in the interpretation (2). In the aim to contribute by an answer to this problem, wepresent << ARCUS >>, a computer aided ultrasonic NDT interpretation, that offers a response to this subjectivity, by the simulation of the manual ultrasonic testing methods interpretation: (frequency method, AVG. method, half amplitude technique, shape detection method and graphical method) (3), by incorporating them a module of expertise, that has made the object of a writing and codification work of a cognition rules, realize jointly with qualified controllers. These rules are based on the fact that the controller has to be familiarized with the different non significant signals, and that it has a goodknowledge of the welding technique and the defects which can be associated to it (1). << ARCUS>> allows the representation of the defect shape according to the principle of the image processing adapted to the radiography through a scanning defects data bank. The future prospects of ARCUS are linked to the automaton construction programmed with the << ARCUS >> software. Fig. |
