Two approaches are envisaged to manage this problematic and to reduce the limitations of the operators:
Simulation by Ray Tracing programs to assist the operator in the inspection preparation and to confirm the experimental results and interpretations. It consists of a module to simulate ultrasonic ray path trajectories on any 3D geometry, into a CAD environment. The module allows to define the configuration of interest and defects inside it, and to obtain the coverage and,in general, the amplitude response estimation of the postulated ultrasonic techniques.
Automatic classifier of ultrasonic indications. The programme analyses the ultrasonic signals, to extract relevant features of them, and following a pattern recognition approach classifies these into different classes, as defect/no defect or indication type 1, type 2, etc.
In this paper, first, characteristics of these modules will be described. It will follow examples of application of these modules on actual inspection topics stating also the advantages of using these tools in comparison with the standard approach.
