Abstract
IIW Working Group 2 - Inspection of Offshore Welded Constructions produced a guidance document in 1989 " Information on Practices for Underwater Non Destructive Testing" IIW/IIS Document V-908-89 (IIW-1033-89). This comprehensive document covered the personnel requirements, the procedures and described the techniques and non destructive testing methods which were in common use. Since then advances have been made in the technology and the practices used during offshore inspection programmes both during diving and Remote Operated Vehicle operations. New philosophies are being put into practice which require accurate and reliable results from the inspection techniques which are being applied. Trials have been carried out which have produced Probability of Detection and Accuracy of Sizing results. International standards are also being produced in respect of fixed offshore structures. This new document has been produced by a Task Force of IIW WG2 as a guide to current offshore inspection practices that are being carried out by diver and Remote Operated Vehicles and gives information on new inspection techniques which are now available and hopefully encompasses the new information which has been produced. Information and guidance is given on the status of diver qualifications and direction is given on literature which can be used to obtain more information on offshore inspection techniques and practices.
