Types, dimensions, orientations and amount of cracks, artificial defects and welding defects to be introduced into test blocks were selected. Welding techniques were developed to implant field cracks and induce cracks into inner surfaces of test blocks.
The first task was the performance of blind tests for vendor selection of primary piping inspections at Loviisa NPP Specifications for inspections and blind tests were prepared and presented for potential vendors. Blind tests were carried out and results evaluated. The second task was the performance of inspection qualification of procedure, equipment and personnel of the selected vendor.
Manufacturing trials of test blocks have given good practice to handle inspection results and to implant and induce cracks in test blocks for detection trials. EB welding proved to be an excellent method to implant field cracks into test blocks because the noise level in ultrasonic inspection will not reveal the implanted area as in normal welding processes.
The vendor of inspection services was selected purely on technical basis and reliability of inspection was assessed by quantitative manner. The real capabilities of vendor could be found out using blind test blocks and a proper vendor could be selected for long term process to improve inspection techniques.
