Abstract

It is the purpose of Danish Steel Works Ltd. to improve our hot-rolled bar production so it can satisfy special customers need for materials used for drawing and forging.

To comply with the increased demands for quality Danish Steels Works Ltd. has investigated the alternatives given within the NDT especially concerning surface defects as scratches and cracks.

The paper includes:

• Formulation of the problem of reject removals when using in-line testing.

• Advantages and disadvantages by in- and offline test.

• Layout presentation of chosen off-line equipment including capacity, cost/t and limitations.

• Test records discussion.

• What can be done to limit the reject percentage from the test equipment in the production line of semifinished materials for the rolling mill and the rolling process itself.
