Acoustic Emission in Pressure Vessels.

Abstract
On leavind the boiler shop, and throughout the rest of their life, pressure vessels undergo resistance tests in accordance with the regulations in force. If acoustic emission (AE) were able to provide high quality information, what impact would this have on the useful life of the vessel ? It is mainly for reasons of safety and accident prevention at work that industrialists (manufacturers and users) have developed acoustic emission, so as to enable them to carry out resistance tests in safety and obtain detailed information on the vessels. This test provides an accurate image of the overall behaviour of the vessel at a given pressure. This image can then be compared during various field tests to obtain decisive information on the behaviour of the vessel particularly insofar as concerns dangerous products (light hydrocarbons, catalyzers, toxic products, etc). This paper will present a data base of various results of pressure vessels monitored by Acoustic Emission, and the description of a case study of pneumatic test.
