Abstract
The ultrasonic testing of austenitic steel welds is a commonly used method in nondestructive testing. Nevertheless, it is often a problem to analyze the received signals in a satisfactory way. Computer simulation of ultrasonics has turned out to be a very helpful tool to get information and physical understanding of complicated wave phenomena inside the samples.A particularly powerful tool is the well established Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique (EFIT) basically formulated by Fellinger (1, 2) and further evaluated by Marklein (3). Recently, EFIT has been extended to simulate elastic waves in inhomogeneous anisotropic media (4, 5).
In this paper, 2D simulations of the ultrasonic testing of different types of V-butt welds with and without backwall breaking notches are presented. The parameters varied during simulation are a) the grain-orientation (either perpendicular or under an angle of ±45° with regard to the sample surface, see fig. 1) and b) the inclination Figure 1: sketch of the grain-orientation nation of the V-butt.These simulations allow to establish a thorough relation between different pulses in the A-Scan signal whether they are related to the reflection of a weld and/or backwall boundary or to the diffraction by a crack. The wave propagation in the samples with the respective evolution of the A-Scan time histories is illustrated by movies.
