Abstract

A new system for advanced automated ultrasonic inspection will be described. The system has been designed with the following new features:
- The ultrasonic, digitizing, and digital signal processing part of the system has been integrated into a separate unit (PSP-4), which can be placed unattended, close to the inspection object. The distance between the PSP-4 and the operating unit can be up to several hundred meters. The data are sent to the operating unit on digital form over an ethernet connection.
- Data from multiple ultrasonic channels can be processed simultaneously using different processing methods (P-scan, T-scan, Through Transmission, TOFD, and processed and raw A-scans).
- Data can be recorded in different formats (imaging, processed A-scans and raw A-scans) at the same time.
- Image data can be stored in a full 3D format for off-line generation of cross section views.
- The recorded A-scan data can be reconstructed off-line with modified gate settings and geometry specifications.
- The system has built-in interface for advanced scanner control including multi axes robots.
The system is operated from an industrial laptop PC with a special designed processor board, using the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system.
