Abstract

The increasing demand for inspection of components with complex geometry, difficult access conditions or located in hazardous environment results in the need for new and advanced scanner systems for NDE. To reduce cost and time needed for design and manufacture of a scanner for a specific job, Force Institute has developed a modular scanner system. The system consists of standard components such as:


• DC-motors with / without integrated driver electronics.
  
• Output gears, magnetic wheel sets, sensors and encoders.
  
• Control electronic modules (Master, Link and Motor Driver Modules)
The required scanner can be assembled from the modular components in combination with specially designed components.

The control electronics is based on individual electronic modules containing control- and communication electronics. The communication between the units is performed through a special ring network, see Fig. 1. The ring network concept allows connection of more motors to the system without the need for extra cables between scanner and Master Scanner Controller Unit. Configuration and control of the scanner is performed from a PC, using the Microsoft Windows environment. The concept is very useful for designing complex scanners. Fig. 2 shows as an example a scanner for video inspection equipped with 7 motors.
