extrusion pipe is especially difficult. There are two reasons for that: First, the crystal grains of TC4
extrusion pipe are larger than those of ordinary TC4 materials and ordinary Austenitic stainless steel. Second, the ultrasonic testing without dead zone must be realizec for the TC4
extrusion pipe whose diameter is 162mm, the length of the pipe is 1028mm, the wall thickness of the pipe is 30mm, the requirement for pipe wall is dia. 0.8mm FBH and the burying depths are 29.5mm and < 0.5mm respectively.Because these pipes are key components used for airplanes, their ultrasonic testing quality must be quaranteed. Therefore, the author has conducted studies about the defect testing method for coarse-grained TC4
extrusion pipes.
Now the author has used the advantage that double crystal creeping wave probe is suitable for the ultrasonic testing of coarse-grained materials, has solved the noise confusing problem of creeping wave probe and has developed a 5MHz crystal creeping wave probe.
In this paper, a technique is introduced of how to use this probe to realize the ultrasonic testing without dead zone for coarse-grained TC4
extrusion pipes. Besides, the principles, characteristics and properties of the newly-developed 5MHz single crystal creeping wave probe has been fully studied and described. Practice shows that this probe has achieved a satisfactory result to the realization of the ultrasonic testing without dead zone for the coarse-grained TC4
extrusion pipes.
