MAPPscan - Acoustic Positioning System for Manual Ultrasonic Testing of Pipes and Components.
P.-H. Svahn - SAQ Kontroll, Sweden.
Keywords: Ultrasonic Examination
MAPPscan is a manual acoustic positioning system connected to an ultrasonic system. The system is developed as a consequence of the increased radiation exposure of specially trained personnel performing ISI with ultrasonic testing in Nuclear Power Plants.
The system has the same flexibility as a manual system with the same accuracy and possibilities to store and evaluate UT-signals as mechanised Ultrasonic systems. It is quicker and easier to mount on the object to be tested compared to fully mechanised systems. The positioning system, is based on acoustic space triangulation and have a spatial accuracy of less than Imm. The UT- system consists of a computer with an ultrasonic board and all the UT-signals are presented on the screen and stored for evaluation. The system has been in full use during the Nuclear shutdown period of 97 in Sweden and has already proven to have many advantages compared to classic manual testing:
It ensures a high quality and reliability of the testing with a great reproducibility in reinspection and improved data evaluation features which can be explored by the UT - expert in an office environment rather than in the radioactive area. The scanning of the tested object can be carried out by personnel with relativ little training which means they can easily be replaced.. Fig.: |
