Multivariable Regression Approach for Porosity Determination in Composite Materials.

Traditionally porosity determination in carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites has been performed using an ultrasonic tone burst through transmission technique. The two main disadvantages of this technique are that multiple measurements must be performed and that it requires both sides of the specimen to be available. In this work a new multivariable regression approach is presented together with preliminary results that show that the multiple measurement problem can be eliminated using a pulsed through transmission technique. We also discuss results from an evaluation of a pulse echo approach suggested to eliminate the need for through transmission measurements.
