Abstract

Nondestructive testing equipments are widely using digital electronic technologies, thus producing large quantities of digital data. Handling and processing these data may cause some problems, as soon as they have to be exchanged between the different partners involved in the inspection operations.

A way of making these exchanges easier is to promote a standard format, which can be recognized by all NDT actors. A first version of such a format was released during the European project TRAPPIST and became the basis of the work of an ad hoc Group which was created in 1995 in the frame of the European Committee of Standardisation (CEN/TC138/AHG3). This working group gathers members from 5 different countries (France, U.K., Germany, Spain, Denmark).

The scope of the standard is to define a format model for the exchange of NDT digital data, which can be applied in priority to the methods taken into account in the works of CEN/TC138. An implementation of such a model requires the definition of applicative standards, including the definition of Application Programming Interfaces (A.P.I.).

Using the Object Modelling Technique (OMT), the draft document describes the definition of the objects and their relationships, as well as their attributes. Ageneric overview of the model can be seen on the enclosed figure.

The draft document is to be submitted to 2-month enquiry in November 1997, which, taking into account the adoption procedure, could lead to a European standard by the end of 1999.
