Ultrasonic Linear Phased Array Disk Inspection at Alliant Energy - Duane Arnold Station
P. Sabourin, EPRI; M. Huting, Alliant Energy
ABSTRACT Steam turbines require periodic inspection to insure continued safe, reliable operation. In 1997, EPRI developed a technique that utilizes ultrasonic linear phased array technology to inspect the disk attachments region on steam turbine rotors that incorporate the straddle-mount design. Further development occurred over the next two years, including finding a company to make the technology commercially available. In October, 1999, the first commercial inspections were performed and among those utilities to take advantage of the new technology was Allient Energy. This paper describes the new technology and compares it to more traditional techniques. It also discusses a unique application for the technique at Duane Arnold and what was achieved as a result of using.
