A New PWR Full-Vessel Examination Capability: The Shell Course and Nozzle Scanner System (SCANS)

ABSTRACT

Maintain ( or improve ) the established FastPar on-vessel examination performance,

and,

Provide for a much easier and faster move into and move out of containment than can be achieved with the FastPaR System. Specifically to:

Move in and out of containment through the personnel hatch, and

Significantly reduce utility support requirements ( primarily polar crane usage ) during the move in and out of containment, and for system assembly and disassembly within containment

The SCANS is comprised of two separate scanners: the SCS (Shell Course Scanner) and ANT (Automated Nozzle Tool) systems. Utilizing two separate scanners will permit the simultaneous examination of the RPV shell course and nozzles, thereby, reducing total on-vessel time for a full-vessel exam. Also, the ANT can be used as a stand-alone capability for 40-month outlet nozzle examinations.
