Abstract:
An ultrasonic model was developed to determine the transfer function
properties of flaws to ascertain and limit the interactive effects with
ultrasonic equipment. The flaws were evaluated by determining those which
had the worst frequency response over the pass band being studied. It was
found that flaws act like low pass filters and that radical changes in
scattered amplitude could be expected. These results were verified by
experimental testing after the model had been experimentally validated.
The transfer function of the UT system could be broken down into three
basic elements: gain, bandwidth, and center frequency. The first two were
fairly insensitive to flaw properties; however, the center frequency for
narrow banded systems was very sensitive to flaw properties. This work is
being used as a basis for assessing equipment operating tolerances for UT
equipment in the ASME Section XI Code. .1 F1
