Abstract:
The ultrasonic measurement and the X-ray diffraction analysis were carried
out on NiTi alloys with different microstructures under tensile
deformation. Plates of NiTi alloy (55,28 wt% Ni and 44,72 wt% Ti) were
heated to 400 deg C or 600 deg C for 1 hour and quenched in water. The
specimen being heat-treated at 400 deg C consisted of the martensite phase
and the intermediate phases. The ultrasonic velocity increased with the
strain, which was explained by alignment of martensite following the twin
deformation. The specimen being heat-treated at 600 deg C consisted of the
martensitic phase and the high-temperature phase. The velocity increased
with the strain, then decreased in the strain range between 0.25 % and 0.4
%. At a strain more than 0.4 %, the velocity slowly decreased and
converged to a value. The intensity of the X-ray diffracted from the high-
temperature phase also decreased with the strain at strains more than 0.25
%. The decrease of the velocity at strains above 0.25 % was explained by
the stress induced martensitic transformation. F33,B13
