ABSTRACT In the shutter ring of a hydraulic press numerous, fast growing cracks appeared during test operation, which would have caused the collapse of the ring in short time. The aim of the study was to find the reasons for the crack formation and to elaborate strategies based on these results to prevent crack initiation to guarantee fatigue strength for a surrogate ring. Therefore a failure analysis has been carried out at first. The necessary stress analyses to study the original situation that showed the crack formation and for the verification of the optimisation strategies have been performed with the finite element method. In order to represent the supportsof the shutter ring realistically, the bearings have been modelled with contact surfaces.
