ABSTRACT Barkhausen noise analysis is a valuable tool for failure analysis of steel parts. The principle of the testing method is explained in a simplified way. 5 case studies are presented which demonstrate the efficiency of the method especially for the detection of grinding burns and skin decarburization. Barkhausen noise analysis, however, can produce also unexpected results and false alarms. For clarification other testing methods as nital etching, metallography or x ray stress analysis should also be available.
