Testing of heterogeneous shielded metal arc welds
Ahmet Karaaslan, Istanbul/Türkei
ABSTRACT In this study, shielded metal arc welds of austenitic stainless steel X 2 CrNi 19 9 with structural steel St 42 were examined. The manual arc welding was carried out using with different welding elektrodes. Welding specimens were characterised with hardness measurement, spectral analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Proper welding electrodes were used to reduce hot cracking during the welding process. Because of dissimilar material combinations between an austenitic stainless steel and a structural steel, different structures and mechanical properties ocurred in the weld metal and in the HAZ (heat affected zone). A more homogenous structure was obtained in the fusion by using proper welding electrodes.
