ABSTRACT The quality of radioscopic inspection depends on the available hardware (detec-tors and system technology) as well as on the education of the NDT personnel as well known from other NDT techniques. Since several years a new generation of X-ray sensitive detec-tors, amorphous silicon (aSi) digital imaging systems or so-called flat panel detectors, is available and will enable further developments in the radioscopic practice and in system engi-neering. This paper compares the IQI sensitivity of two kinds of flat panel detectors with the conventional X-ray image intensifier. The applicability of these systems is discussed for weld and casting inspection. High-resolution detectors are investigated with respect to their techni-cal and economical advantages.
