ABSTRACT Formulations of nitrocellulose show already under the condition of an ignition by an external fire very high burning rates. In the case of storage the directives SprengLR 011 or SprengLR010 lay down test procedures to find the correct storage group and as a result of this protective and safety distances have to be considered. The aim of some new investigations was to show that a small-scale test procedure developed for solid organic peroxides can be applied to low-nitrated, and in a qualified sense, to higher nitrated NC-formulations although they have a much rapid burning rate. In the case of a more intensive ignition an other type of function considering the geometry of the burning mass should be used for extrapolation.
