Lightweight Design Through Optimized Joining Technology - In depth Knowledge of Physical and Technological Properties for the most Effective Use of Materials

ABSTRACT Starting with the demands a structure has to fulfil, it is shown how joining technology can contribute towards meeting these requirements and the interdependency between joining technology, material and structural design is highlighted. With the help of examples, it is illustrated how improvements of the particular joining technology, design optimisation, the use of superior materials in conjunction with a suitable joining technology, and the use of hybrid joining technologies can contribute towards improving the properties of a structure and thus achieve weight savings.
