New in Motion Inspection System for Railroad Wheels.

ABSTRACT Throughout their service life, wheel sets of high-speed trains (ICE, etc.) are exposed to high dynamic loads. Currently, wheel rims and discs of all ICE wheel sets are subject to non-destructive testing every 250,000 km. SUPRA, Rail-integrated In-motion-Inspection Equipment, an innovative non-destructive testing system for the inspection of Europe's new generation high-speed trains is introduced. The SUPRA system is capable to examine wheels at overrun speeds of approximately 5 km/h, thus eliminating the high costs of train immobilization.
