Ultrasonic welding of metal sheets to glass fibre composites
Sebastian Krüger, Guntram Wagner und Dietmar Eifler, Kaiserslautern
ABSTRACT One main research field of the Institute of Materials Science at the University of Kaiserslautern is the ultrasonic welding of metals with brittle materials. Recently it could be shown, that it is also possible to join aluminium sheets and polymer-glass fibre composites by ultrasonic energy. By ultrasonic shear waves the necessary welding energy is transmitted in the bonding zone, the polymer matrix is softened and partly pushed out of the joining area. By such procedure a direct contact to the load bearing component of the polymer-glass fibre composite can be realised. A maximum shear load of 22 MPa was reached until now.
