ABSTRACT Recent catastrophic failures recommend to remind the basics of mechanical metallurgy, in particular the relation between residual stresses and brittle fracture. The interactions between the stress state and the fracture type as well as the development of fractures are thus highlighted in the present contribution which is dedicated to engineering practise.
