The influence of stress. The relationship between initial crack propagation at notches and compressive stress
Katsuaki Furukawa, Chiba, and Yasuo Ochi, Tokyo, Japan
ABSTRACT The first stage of fatigue is an important problem because its width is very short but its life is 80 % of the whole life. And it is well known that the initial crack growth is very fast under the conditions of existing compressive stress. The reason is that a crack opening arises from the remaining tensile stress. Therefore, in this study the effect of compressive stress was investigated. As a result, it was found that the acceleration of initial crack growth is in proportion to compressive stress, and striations were found in the initial crack.
