Assessment of Crack Extension at Cross Section Changes in Switch Blade Rails

ABSTRACT Fatigue cracks can originate under unfavourable circumstances in the region of the cross section changes in the foot of switch blade rails. These can lead to fracturing of the rail. To qualify the assessment criteria, especially the period of the non-destructive testing of the switch blade rails, the Monte Carlo simulation is used to analyse the behaviour of the growing cracks. The necessary period of NDT is derived from the unfavourable fast crack growth regarding the non-destructively investigated crack size and considering the service load of the switch.
