Portable System for Remote and Automated In-Situ Inspection of Turbine Rotors

ABSTRACT
In-service inspection of turbine rotors requires dismantling of rotors. A combination of an Ultrasonic Phased Array system with a small magnetic scanner allows the inspection of rotors after opening of the turbine housing. The inspection is performed from the narrow lanes between the turbine discs / blades. Considerable timesaving can be achieved using this system. Results of the Phased Array inspection of turbine rotors are presented along with operation experience with the new magnetic scanner.
