Over the past 25 years performance demonstration has progressed from an idea to a requirement adopted by national and international codes and standards, and mandated by several national regulatory authorities. The process has been slow proceeding through several phases. These stages begin with denial, and have progressed through recognition, solution formulation, and initial demonstration programs. In this paper the author discusses where we have been, where we will likely go in the future, the costs and the benefits.
