Abstract:
PNGV (Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles) is developing an 80 mpg. family-sized vehicle. The gas turbine (with ceramic components) is a strong contender for the auxiliary power unit in the PNGV powertrain. However, several issues confront the implementation of ceramics for the PNGV gas turbine. This presentation will review the status of the gas turbine with respect to ceramic materials and will describe PNGV and the Automotive Materials Partnership and their strategy for achieving the 80 mpg vehicle.
