CERAMIC COMPONENT APPLICATIONS
Abstract:
High performance monolithic Si3 N4 structural ceramic components have been in production and use in commercial aircraft turbomachinery applications now for over two years, and additionally a number of components are being developed and evaluated for use in aircraft auxiliary power unit and
propulsion engine turbine hot sections, industrial power
generation turbines and automotive hybrid vehicle
turbogenerators.
The current usage and performance assessment of in-process and final inspection Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) techniques for these components will be presented The discussion will include rationale for current production NDE techniques, their performance capabilities, degree/history of correlation with subsequent component
performance, and cost vs. benefit issues. Finally, future needs for NDE technique capabilities as structural ceramic
components are transitioned from aerospace to industrial and automotive applications, including the need for improvements in performance and substantial reductions in cost of NDE,
will be discussed
