Abstract:
We developed an improved inspection technique for the quantitative, nondestructive mopping of both porosity and composition of ceramic composites The system entails use of a highly-collimated microfocus Brehmstrahlung source with an energy-discriminating detector Coupling this equipment to numerical analysis of the x-ray spectra (i) improves spatial resolution, (ii) enhances the accuracy of phase discrimination, and (iii) significantly shortens acquisition time We applied this method to study the microstructure uniformity of ceramic composites made by directed metal oxidation and chemical vapor infiltration
