Abstract:
An embeddable, fiber optic sensor has been developed for on-line detection of voids during the cure of advanced polymer matrix composites. The sensor is prepared from a standard silica glass optic fiber by removing a 1-cm length of cladding to expose the core. The total transmitted light intensity in the optic fiber is affected by the amount of voids that form on the sensor's 1-cm active sensing length. The results of a mathematical model that has been developed to relate the sensor signal to void content while accounting for changes in the resin cure state and temperature are presented. The performance of the sensor in Hercules 3501-6 epoxy resin is demonstrated, and various applications of this sensor are considered.
