For the ultrasonic methods the limiting influences on the crack detectability will be discussed considering three different
aspects: 1. Acceptability requirements for cracks, 2. Physical interactions used for the detection, 3. Geometrical and physical
properties of the crack. The examples of the precedent chapters have shown that much is depending on the geometrical
situation of the crack (close to the surface or surface breaking or within the volume), on its orientation and also on the shape
of the crack conture. The conture influences are especially of interest in cases of the application of TOFD approaches or
approaches where the diffracted energy is mainly used for the detection.
