Development of a Probe for Ultrasonic Testing of Tubes

ABSTRACT The integrity of tubes used in heat exchangers is inherently difficult to evaluate by non destructive tests. In order to develop a quick and reliable way for measuring the wall thickness of these tubes, a special ultrasonic probe was constructed. Tests performed in laboratory and in the industry were carried out using tubes 36 mm in diameter with a nominal thickness of 4.2 mm. The results indicate that measurements with an accuracy around 0.1 mm can be achieved in the determination of tube walls thicker than 2 mm.
