| Abstract |
| | New Shinkansen vehicles use hollow wheel axles whose inner diameter is 60 mm.We have developed a movable full-automatic ultrasonic testing equipment for these axles which are submitted to in-service inspection every 30,000 km run.Using this equipment, we can inspect a whole axle within 3 minutes with access from one side of axle.It can detect an artificial flaw of 3 mm depth at press fitted parts and one of 0.15 mm depth at other flat parts at high speed mode, by two angle probes revolving spirally at 200 rpm with 5 mm pitch inside of axle.If it detects an echo which is higher than the predetermined threshold level, it automatically scan the suspicious area with 1 mm pitch at precise mode. The result of inspection is processed to graphic display by computer. An outlined performance of this equipment is given.(Author abstract) 3 Refs. |
