AB Web cracking tendencies were evaluated in rails similar to those
having unacceptable behaviour in field. Cracking tendency was
determined through the use of two destructive measurement techniques,
both of which require sawcuts along the neutral axis of the rail.
These tests provide an assessment of the stress intensity available
to drive web cracks. Both of these techniques yielded a similar
ranking of cracking tendency over a range of several samples. An
ultrasonic-based nondestructive measurement technique was also used
to map out residual stress distributions in these rails. Many of the
rails evaluated in this study exhibited stress intensities of about
twice their ability to resist unstable fracture, in essence. Although
the sampling was limited, a simple correlation was seen between
maximum compressive longitudinal stress in the webs of the rails and
the average stress intensity calculated by the destructive methods.
