| Abstract | |
| An automated ultrasonic setup to evaluate the difference of the principal stresses along a radial trace across the rim of monoblock railroad wheels is described. Its manipulator has a size of approx35-x200x130 mm 3 and a weight of approx12 kg and is fixed to the rim by magnetic switches and a gripping level. The manipulator houses the EMAT, preamplifiers, and two servomotors to move the EMAT along the measuring trace and to turn the probe approx90 . The central part of the system is housed in a rigid and closed cabinet with integrated cooling system. It contains the ultrasonic transmitter receiver electronics, an amplifier with an automated gain control and a patented device to determine the appropriate zero crossings of two radio frequency backwall echoes needed for the ultrasonic time-of-flight measurement. A high performance counter with a temperature stabilized 500 MHz time reference and the master-central processing unit are mounted in the center part of the cabinet. Operation of the setup is discussed and technical data of the system listed. | |
